Killing the Giant Mole

Holy Mole-y!

First things first: Read the knowledge base article! If it’s not in the guide it might be in there. Also, if you see any weird things or mistakes (this was once posted on the RS forums, so it might have some of that stuff) please notify me so I can fix it, thanks.

Introduction

The giant mole is a powerful creature that has a unique combat style and can be fought solo, but it is faster with a team.

Some skill overviews:

Melee:
If you have good armor to bring (over rune) and a good weapon (something that has a good stab, or whip/barrows), then melee might be for you. If you are under level 60 defense, be sure to bring lots of lobster+ food. The mole hits between 10 and 20 often, and can hit into low 20’s, so be careful.

Range:
Ranging is suggested, because you don’t get hurt, and range is normally puncturing. Chinchompas are effective, but normal range is suggested. Crossbows with enchanted bolts, throwing knives and a magic short bow work well.

Mage:
Bad idea. The mole is almost immune to mage. Not suggested.

~~~ 2 ~~~
What to wear:
If you are over level 75 defense, you get to a point where you need not worry too much about dying and keeping 3 things. Just come prepared. Boots of lightness, spottier cape, pennance gloves, etc., give you less weight, this will help if you have those free slots.
Melee:
Any melee barrows is fine if you can afford. Don’t wear granite, because it is heavy. Rune is fine, because it is fairly light and tough. Proselyte goes well with an armor if a spot isn’t taken, because it is cheap and boosts prayer. You also could wear armor such as dragonhide if you have protect from melee, prayer potions, and high defense (75+). If you don’t have a helm, mining helmet (lit) can be a handy light source.
Weapons:
Any dragon weapon is pretty much fine. Dragon long and scimitar are mainly used, they are good weapons to stand up against the mole, but the lunge option will give you better results. Any barrows weapon with armor works good. Slow weapons are bad, because the mole moves a lot. Rune is usually a bit too weak for the mole, so stay away from it if possible. Also, whips are good for part 2 of the mole, but in the first part, use something with more strength, like a dds (good against first part, but not second).
Range:
Dragonhide or Karil's is recommended. It doesn’t matter too much because you are aiming to stand behind something when ranging the mole, unless you have a high defense level and can stand up to it. Boots of lightness, spottier cape, etc. are nice also, so you can run faster.
Weapons:
Recommended weapons are msb with pretty much any arrows, rune crossbow with any (enchanted helps) bolts you can get, and throwing knives. Chinchompas are not as good, as they have no puncturing to them. Cannons are ineffective, don’t use them. Also, a crystal bow does have a good stab effect and is a nice weapon to use if you can afford it.
Mage: Because the Mole's thick skin is highly resistant to Magic spells, using it is NOT suggested.
What to bring:
Light source: Bullseye lantern recommended, as it cannot go out. However, a candle and a tinderbox will work. Also, if you have a free head and 65 firemaking, try bringing a mining helmet. They are good ways to lighten your inventory.
Spade: If you do not have a spade, there is a respawn in an estate agents house next to Falador park. You need this to get in there.
Food. Swordfish+ recommended for less than 70 defense. After that, using lobsters is good. Most of your inventory should be food.
Potions: If you have the potions to spare, these are also nice to bring along to boost your stats. Energy pots are also handy, because you have to run a lot. Attack potions, defense potions, strength potions, and range potions are stat boosters.
Other armor: Alternative armor is also recommended if you have any to spare, in case a style doesn’t work.
Teleports: Teleports are recommended for lower levels, but usually aren’t needed.
The mole cave:
The mole cave is the place where the mole hides, and can be an advantage or disadvantage, if you don’t know it. First of all, look at the kbase guide to see the picture. There is a clearing in the middle of the mole cave, where it says giant mole. That is the mole respawn point. However, it can move all around the cave. If you kill it, go to the center, because it respawns in 5 minutes.
There is another clearing that is between the exit and the respawn point. That is also a common point where the mole is. To find the mole, run around the tunnels, and try not to repeat yourself. If you have a small clan with no poison, stick together. If it is big, appoint people to different parts of the cave to ambush the mole. If you have poison and low hp, split up and look for the mole / drop.
Energy pots might be an advantage, because you have to run a lot.
Moles Tactics:
The giant mole, first of all, is immune to cannons, nearly immune to mage, and weak against stab or range.
The giant mole delivers slash techniques with a nice mix of attacks and strength in his attack. He can hit pretty high, so be prepared.
The first thing you need to know about mole tactics is that the mole RUNS away from you, by burying into the ground and popping up elsewhere, often extinguishing a non bullseye lantern lamp. You must find it elsewhere in the cave.
For the first part, when you face the mole at full health, it will let you attack it until about half health to a third health and start digging. I advise you not to use your best strength with the exception of potions on this.
The second stage, you must find him. Use energy pots go around the cavern, and unleash your specials.
The mole is not aggressive, so plan your attacks carefully on second stage.
The mole also has 240 hitpoints.
The giant mole digs in certain directions. These do not correspond to where it comes out at all. It is random.
~~~ 6 ~~~

Mole, first stage:

The giant mole in the first stage is fairly easy to hit. At this point, he stays in 1 place until about half health. Food is most needed here, as it is all at once. Don’t use your special if it takes up the whole bar, as then you will not have for later. Mainly use the controlled/lunge technique at this time, because mole is weak toward that.

Also, this is a good time to use a swig of that good ol’ attack/strength/defense potion you’re carrying. It is better use here than stage 2. In this stage, it will most likely help as you are attacking for a long time, not just 15 seconds. If you use a potion while on stage 2, it may not work and wear off by the next time you find him.

Also, big clans can get setup while this is happening.

~~~ 7 ~~~
Mole, second stage:
The second stage of the mole is much slower than the last part. Every time you find him, I suggest you use your special and prayer. Use any quick stat boosts, not potions. The only potions you want to use now are prayer potion and/or energy potion, for running around.
If you don’t have a special ready, be sure to use a stabbing technique. The giant mole does not stop digging for teleblock, and continues to dig if hindered by a bind spell.
If you have a small or medium sized team, be coordinated on when you attack it, so that you can get maximum damage in before it digs away.
~~~ 8 ~~~

Mole worlds:

When you see a team or person already killing the mole, I suggest you worldhop. It is bad for the mole to be killed or harmed by the other team, as it is less fun. You may also not get the drop. However, if you want, it may be good to join up the teams if you like that sort of negotiation.

Crowded worlds are often mole free, try to go on a clan chat page to organize worlds for the killing. If another team or person comes, I suggest you finish killing the current mole and world-hop.

Also, try German worlds if you do not plan to trade. They may not be occupied very much.

~~~ 9 ~~~
Other tactics:
Prayer: Since the mole is not around much, prayer doesn’t do too much good. However, rangers are highly recommended to have protect from melee in case the mole attack you. Bring a prayer pot if you plan to use prayer.
Poison: Poison is harmful and helpful. For a small group, it can do much needed extra damage, but it can also kill the mole when it has dug away when at low health, and if you don’t find the drop, it will be lost. Be careful of this. Also, big clans don’t really need poison for an extra factor, as numbers alone can kill it. If it is used, there is little risk due to the fact that a big clan can find it easily.
Cannons: This section is in progress.
Magic: Don’t try magic, as the mole is almost immune to it. The only kind of magic to use would be bind spells, but it's probably not worth it.
Enchanted bolts: These help when fighting as they are giving extra damage, but only at the moment, unlike poison. These are encouraged if you can afford them.
Chinchompas: These are good with high ranging level, but they aren’t as good as regular range due to the lack of stab power.
~~~ 10 ~~~

Rewards:

The Giant mole 100% drops:
Big bones
Mole claw
1-3 moleskins

Normal item drops:

For the drop, the mole can drop anywhere from arrows, to runes, to strength amulets, to half keys to dragonstones, and rarely, dragon med helms and dragon shield halves. The mole isn’t the absolute best item dropper, but I have seen a dragon med drop, it does happen. Often it will be arrows or runes. That is normal.

Big bones: Needed for prayer, bury them. Need I say more?

Mole claw/mole skin: Mole claw and mole skin are the same thing except for the graphic and name. The use for these is to trade them in to Wyson the Gardener for birds nests. These will never contain eggs. They will contain more vegetable seeds than normal nests, also containing rings up to diamond and rarely, a tree seed. The skins are tradable, but bird’s nests aren’t. Use a pestle and mortar on a birds nest to crush it. It is used at level 81 herblore with toadflax to make a Saradomin brew.

~~~ 11 ~~~
Teams:
Little team: below 5 people
Medium team: 6-13 people
Large clan: 14+ people
If you have a little team, the thing you should to is hunt for it as a group and follow the leader. If it is poisoned, split up and look for the drop. It should be the only red dot on the map. If you are all high level, you could also try a split up approach after you hit the first stage damage.
If you have a large clan, put members at different spots of the caves and communicate through clan chat. Poison is all right because members at different points can see it. Another strategy is to have everyone posted, and one person (strongest person and/or leader) run around to find it and help kill it.
If you have a medium clan, a good strategy is to have two groups go around. 2 or 3 groups, 3-5 people each.
Clan chat, with any type of clan, is recommended unless you can use pming more efficiently or stay as a group. Also, the mole is one of the monsters in which the shared loot was designed for, let it be of use to you.
++ Beginners Guide ++
If you have read the guide, but are still uncertain of what to do, this is a guide to start killing moles. If you can't do part of it, substitute it for something else. Enjoy.
Step 1:
Grab 2 friends, 80+ combat that have experience in killing the mole. Then, get at least 55 defense, 60 attack and 55 strength. Then, buy rune plate and legs, and dragon longsword (must have done lost city). Fill your inventory full of:
1 bullseye lantern
1 spade
26 swordfish
Step 2:
Go down in the cave with your friends. Once there, search for the mole. World hop if someone else is already killing it. Use controlled (poke) on the mole, letting one of your other friends take damage, until it is half health and digs. Keep running around the cave until you find it. If there is poison, split up when it is low on health.
Step 3:
Once you get the loot, go to the south end of the cave (after you split the loot equally) and head to Falador bank to sell your loot for cash (general store usually) and cash in mole skins and claws for birds nests by talking to Wyson the Gardener in Falador park.
Congratulations You killed you first mole!
