Introduction
Fishing is one of the 3 main resource skills. It allows you to harvest food needed for fights and quests easily. There are hundreds of fishing spots dotted around RuneScape, with different fish available at each one. Fish is generally used in priority to other foods because you can eat them in one bite, and you dont have to go through a lot of complex preperation stages, as you have to do with others.
Equipment
There are several pieces of Equipment used in fishing, with each used for a different fish, or group of fishes. Most of these pieces of Equipment are available to buy from any of many fishing shops around the seaside towns and villages of RuneScape. Fishing shops are marked by a
symbol.

Fishing Spots
There are small fishing spots all over RuneScape. There are different fish in each one that, so long as you have the right level and Equipment, you can catch. Fishing spots are marked on the minimap with a
symbol. This is what a fishing spot looks like:

You can distinguish it from the rest of the water by the blue spray of water rising from the surface.
Sometimes you may find that, even though you have the right Equipment and the right level to catch a fish, when you click on the fishing spot with the option that you want, it will not let you catch anything. This is because even though they use the same tools to catch, some fish live in different areas.
This will explain what you may find in each fishing spot:
| Fishing Options | Fish |
| Net/Bait | Shrimps Anchovies Sardines Herring |
| Bait | Slimy Eel Cave Eel or Lava Eel or Leaping Trout Leaping Salmon Leaping Sturgeon |
| Net | Monkfish or Karambwanji |
| Lure/Bait | Pike Trout Salmon |
| Cage/Harpoon | Lobsters Tuna Swordfish |
| Net/Harpoon | Oysters Bass Cod Mackerel Caskets Sharks |

At lv 68 Fishing, you can enter the Fishing Guild. There, it has a bank right next to the fishing spots. For more information visit the Fishing Guild guide.
Barbarian Fishing
If you take up training with Otto the barbarian, next to the Baxtorian Falls, then he will teach you several new ways of fishing.
The first new way of fishing you will learn is catching the few fish strong enough to battle against the forces of the rushing water of the falls. As the water is so fast, and the fish so strong, you cannot use an ordinary rod.

Otto will give you a Barbarian Rod, which is much stronger and thicker than an ordinary rod. This also means it needs more skill to use. Because of the more skill needed, you get Strength and Agility experience as well.
Because these fish need all the food they can get, it means you can use a much wider range of bait than usual. You can use the normal bait, as well as feathers, but also, if you use a knife on the fish you catch, then you can extract the Roe, Caviar, or simply use the chopped up fish parts as bait. This means that you can keep fishing without need to keep replenishing your stocks of bait.
This shows what fish you can catch at what level.
| Fish | Fishing Level | Strength and Agility Level | Fishing Experience | Strength and Agility Experience |
![]() Leaping Trout | 48 | 15 | 50 | 5 |
![]() Leaping Salmon | 58 | 30 | 70 | 6 |
![]() Leaping Sturgeon | 70 | 45 | 80 | 7 |
Otto will also teach you to fish with your hands, using your fingers to catch the fish. This requires an amount of strength, to pull against the fish.
This shows the requirements to do this:
| Fish | Fishing Level | Strength Level | Fishing Experience | Strength Experience |
![]() Tuna | 55 | 35 | 80 | 8 |
![]() Swordfish | 70 | 50 | 100 | 10 |
![]() Shark | 90 | 76 | 110 | 11 |
The Trawler Minigame
This minigame is a team game that you can get large catches of fish with. It is a safe minigame, there is nothing to kill you there.
Murphy, the trawlerman of Port Khazard, owns a ship with which he can catch many more the amount of fish than people can usually catch with small nets and rods. You, and a team of friends have to help him repair his ship as it sails around the sea. If you dont repair it fast enough, then the ship will sink!, and you will be left stranded by the waters just off Port Sarim.
Using this minigame you can obtain the 2 rarest types of fish, Sea Turtles and Manta Rays. There is no other way of catching these fish.

Cape of Acheivement
When you reach level 99 in a Fishing, you will be able to wear the Fishing Skillcape. When you wear this, it shows to everyone around you that you are a master fisher. While wearing it, it also boosts your level to 100/99. You can also do a cape emote to show off your fishing prowess.
Barbtail Harpoons
While hunting, you may end up catching the Barbtail Kebbit. If you use the barb from its tail on a log, you will craft it into a barbtail harpoon. This acts just like a normal harpoon, but you can wield it, therefore saving a spot in your inventory.
Random Events
While fishing you may find some strange goings on occuring.
Whirlpool

The fishing spot you are fishing at may suddenly turn into a whirlpool. If this happens, back off, or you may find your Equipment being sucked into the whirlpool.
Big Fish

While fishing a huge fish may leap out the water and eat your Equipment. Dont worry, as it will spit it out nearby.
River Troll

At any point while fishing you may disturb a river troll, which can leap out the water and attack you. You may want to fight it, or run away.
